The article introduces Electrolux's new concept: the Vac from the Sea, which will be made entirely from recycled plastic found in the ocean. According to the article, the location of where the plastic is collected will define the look of the vacuum so no two vacs will look alike - kind of cool.
One thing that gets me though is that Electrolux is recruiting volunteers to collect the plastic from the ocean rather than starting collection sites for people to donate their plastics to become vacs. Call me crazy but what about a pro-active approach to help recycle plastics into vacuums before it even goes into the oceans?
This whole idea is based on the premise that most plastic is in the oceans. While I applaud their efforts to clean the oceans of plastics, I'd venture a guess to say that landfills probably contain more plastic. Though I guess it's less stinky/more fun/better PR to volunteer on a boat collecting plastics instead of spending your days in a landfill. Let's be honest, who would care if you were cleaning a landfill? And "Vac from a Landfill" has less appeal - no question.
I will say that the prototype looks pretty cool. I look forward to seeing one of these Vacs in person but I can't help but wonder if it'll suck...

Ah the garbage patch - but do you really think there's more trash in the oceans than in landfills or is it that we care about it because we can see it?
Ps- would you vacuum with it?
